Barbara Kruger's photographic prints in my mind really capture the essence of this poem by Paul Dunbar. The poem touches upon the idea of being trapped and trying to rebel against the system. The bird beats his wings bloody to try to get out of this cage he is stuck in. While the narrator in this poem does often refer to him now understanding how the caged bird feels, i don't believe this is the main message in the poem. Barbara's prints use the colors red, black, and white which are the colors or propaganda. The prints also have messages that reflect on American society just as propaganda does. According to webster dictionary, propaganda means, the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person. What this art and form of art reminds me of from the poem is that the bird seems like someone who would go against the grain of society. Someone who would be the leader or a rebellion front and who would have propaganda of its own to send its messages out that the bird would hope would change the world. The bird in my mind is a revolutionary.
